I've never seen a rainstorm appear out of nowhere the way it does here in Georgia. It's incredible they usually come in the evening after or during dinner. This one had hail with it...yes hail...in the summer...in the south. There's something moving and also calming about it. I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch during many more sudden storms this summer.

Tower Heist

After Greenberg was completed I guess Ben Stiller and Noah Baumbach now have a working relationship. Tower Heist to be directed by Brett Ratner, (Rush Hour Trilogy, among others,) stars Ben Stiller and Dave Chappelle, with Noah Baumbach on the writing team. This might actually work but it does have some components that would lead me to believe otherwise. However, I will refrain from any expressions of cynicism until I at least see the trailer.

The Emperor's Children, however is a different story, Mr. Baumbach is writing and directing this one. I'm certain it'll be great. I've been anticipating a film that would top Kicking and Screaming. Margot came close, but this sounds like it may be in the running too.

I have enjoyed getting to know June Yong Lee, one of our visiting artists here. Today we discussed working under/with mentors and how they can influence our work in a good way. June introduced me to the fascinating work of Osamu James Nakagawa. Who was a mentor to him in graduate school. Though both artists' work is quite different it is interesting to see the influence of one artist to another.

Zhao Renhui and The Institute of Critical Zoologists came together to document the island of Pulau Pejantan. The island was only just discovered in 2005 in all of its fantastical glory. The island has species that are found nowhere else in the world. Sand worms and Lantern fish just to name a few. "Isolated in the Pacific Ocean, about 70% of the estimated 600 species found on the island exist nowhere else on the globe."

Ira Glass played a pivotal role in the creation of This American Life. He has a manifesto posted at Transom.org. Much of what he says can be applied to any kind of creative work, especially documentary film/photography. Alec Soth said he was slightly annoyed with photography because the medium is somewhat muted.

Sound without images is so intriguing and I hope to incorporate sound in future projects. A few "sketch" sound projects are listed under shush and blab. I'm looking forward to it Tim, it'll be good to work together. I need some better recording equipment.

Also, how does Ira Glass pull off those ginormous glasses so well?

I will be going to Grad School at UGA this Fall. I am ecstatic to be going to a new place for a more permanent amount of time, (meaning more than three months.) I am also really looking forward to being able to devote my time to and focus my efforts on image making. Since I am really leaving this time I've been reflecting on my time here in this house that belonged to my grandparents. I've had many great times here and I will miss this home a great deal.

I've finally had some time to devote to scanning and these images are from Butch Anthony's Annual Doo Nanny in Seale Alabama. I'll just go ahead and say that it is a bit strange that Butch is now getting a great deal of attention, and people from New York Galleries come to the same little town where I would ride four-wheelers every weekend. (Yes, it has been confirmed, I spent my fair share of time in Alabama.) But, I'm glad to see Butch finally get some recognition he deserves. Possum Trot!

Also, if you happen to be in the Chattahoochee Valley area for Halloween this year you may want to consider attending the Boo Nanny.

Recently I found some inspiring cigarette ads from magazines at this junk/thrift store here in town.

Gina knows junk and it was really great to meet a local shop owner. I'm getting more interested in local small business owners again and I think I'll continue the project once began in Black and White with Larry Rose. If you're in the Columbus area check out her store.

So in case you were unaware, a large number of "lo-no budget" films are made every month especially in big cities full of "directors," but, these guys did a superb job on a very small budget. I am certain we will see more work from this team of honest filmmakers. Please watch this film and support them any way you can. This kind of filmmaking is happening more and more and it is great to see. I might actually make something myself one day, instead of talking about it.

John Rory Fraser made this film about a hat shop while at Stanford. I've been in contact with him since I began my grad school search. I think the work produced at Stanford is superb and this film falls right in line with the work of other great documentary filmmakers that have studied at Stanford.

Make-Out with Violence

Three guys from Nashville got together and wrote a script. They needed money to make a film. They were talented and creative and musically inclined, so...they formed a band, The Non-Commissioned Officers, to raise money. The music went so well with the film they used it in the soundtrack of their movie Make-Out With Violence. I'm looking forward to seeing this film it's been nearly four years in the making. Well done, everyone...see, it can be done.

I took the scenic route out of the state of Maine yesterday and made it to Boston via Madeline, the old '83 Honda Shadow. I have some promising things in the works in Philadelphia, but other than that I'm hoping I find a place of my own soon. This vagabond thing is cool for a while but it gets old. If a place to rest my head brings additional responsibility then I am ready for it.

The Oxford American Magazine asked to reproduce this image for an article. It's a great magazine about the South and the Art, Music, and Literature found there. It turned out really great. I gotta say, the South is really growing on me and, I do miss it even though I'm in one of the most beautiful places in the country right now, the coast of Maine. Robbie Cooper has begun a project that captures peoples interaction with the screens we stare at. I'm not a gamer, don't really understand how people can stare at a tv screen for hours on end pushing buttons and making funny faces, however, this project is interesting and sheds light on what happens between the player and the game. Watch the video "Immersion" on his sight as well. I think he's using the same technology as Errol Morris uses for his interviews.

So my time in rural Georgia has come to an end, for now. In a few weeks I am driving my motorcycle up nearly the entire eastern coast of the U.S. (Savannah, Georgia to Rockland, Maine.) Oh how I will miss the south, the people, the lush greenery, the stillness, the lonely highways, the muggy heat of midday. I am working at the Workshops in Maine, I am excited about going, and at the end of the summer the job ends, uncertainty ensues...bring it.

Okay, so I drove 4 hours to Savannah to hear Alec Soth , talk for an hour, a little strange, I am aware of this by now. But, it was quite informative; I was impressed with the city, and had a great time staying with a cousin of mine. Alec spoke of the current state of image saturation and questioned ever taking another photograph again. Because essentially we can just type in what we want to photograph and get 10,000 results in Google image search...good point Alec. Don't think I'm putting the camera away just yet though.

Saturday I saw Dr. Dog at BottleTree in Birmingham. Hands down, the best live show I've seen in a while, full of energy, and thrilling musicianship...fun. Late and painful drive back, trying to stay awake after exhausting yourself dancing and loosing your voice...not fun.

Microwaves, TVs, Football, and Church

This is my first morning back in the South. The smell of bacon is still in the air, as everyone is settling in to watch "The Game" on giant TVs. I'm not sure what it all means but I am just going along with it. This is such a strange place to me. I'm really resisting being here but, for the moment, I must be here. I'm planning on selling everything I can, probably on ebay, to expedite my recovery from months of traveling. (I wonder how much virginity would go for?)

As much as I am put off by a number of things here in this part of the country, it is where I'm from, (notice the "h",) and it's a part of me. That's even hard for me to type. I'm sure over the next few weeks of being here I will explore, and hopefully find those strange and beautiful places to photograph and write about.

Last Night, First Riot

My last night in Philly, (for now), was the best yet. When the game was over everyone poured out of their row houses and filled the streets, cheering, honking.

Then we rode our bikes down to Broad Street some how we ended up right in the middle of everything. I've never gotten/given so many high fives in my life...total! Go Phils! I've never even watched a Phils game...until now.

I stumbled across this site UNphotographable full of delightful stories, while looking at the work of an Atlanta, GA based photographer, Michael David Murphy. He has a great deal of work concerning the approaching election. I can't believe it but I'm actually getting excited about going to vote.

Because I'll be making it home this weekend I can vote, with no need for an absentee ballot. Although, I will miss Philly, good people, good music, and cold fall weather. I hope to come back soon.
